this is a legally binding international agreement in order to link development with the environment to sustainable land management. in the wake of environment protection and the vital link related to it, the United Nations conference on environment and development was held in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro.along with many outcomes this aspect was also formalized. the convention calls for resolution of redressing the arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas, known as the drylands, where some of the most vulnerable ecosystems and peoples can be found.
this convention is joined by 197 parties.







conference of parties(COPs): in order to keep the convention alive and kicking a conference is invited for time to time. that's why this organization also meets time to time. right from its inception in 1996, there has total cop 14 been organized so far. cop 13 was held in ordos china in 2017. COP 14 was just recently held in New Delhi, India.

The new UNCCD 2018-20130 Strategic Framework is the most comprehensive global commitment to achieve Land degradation Neutrality (LDN) in order to restore the productivity of vastly degraded land thereby improving the livelihoods of more than 1.3 billion people.
